Avenging Hawks swoop in to redress the balance

The U12 AFC Henley Hawks hosted Darby Green & Potley Dynamos on Saturday 26th January, the Dynamos had won the previous encounter and the Hawks were keen to make good on that in their second meeting of the season.

Play started slowly and in the first quarter neither side was dominant. Henley warmed up and took some ground (and possession) from the Dynamos. At 9 minutes, Jenson Lea charged down a scuffed keeper clearance, but his shot was saved resulting in a corner for the Hawks. George Acock joined Lea in driving forward and at 13 minutes another Jenson Lea shot was saved by the keeper.

There was good build up play on the left championed by Lucas Wilson on the wing and Daniel Flowers at left back. Lucas Wilson cleverly intercepted a goal kick, took the ball down the left, took a shot but this was again saved. The resulting corner was taken by Jenson Lea and Daniel Flowers made a decisive break forward to slam it into the goal giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead.

Conor Quinn was subbed on at right wing and within seconds had made a break on goal - he was one on one with the keeper who pulled off a save to deny him. There was more pressure from Jenson Lea that forced a corner, which nearly resulted in an own goal, but was cleared off the line; Conor Quinn shot the rebound back in, but it was again saved.

After a flurry of Henley activity, the Dynamos regrouped and countered with a couple of strong breaks. Louis Catlin at right back applied his usual no nonsense approach and dealt with the first. Their next break resulted in a forceful shot that saw the scores even at 1-1 at 26 minutes.

Oliver Duncan took a ball supplied from Daniel Flowers and made a lovely pass through to Conor Quinn who took a shot on goal, but it was saved by the Dynamos’ keeper. The Dynamos countered again but Hawks’ keeper Max Messias had things under control and pulled off a great save at 29 minutes taking the Hawks into half time with honours even.

Man of the Match Ben Hemmings came on after the break and immediately made his presence known with some strong, but fair, tackles and runs up the right. Within a minute of the whistle, the Hawks were awarded a free kick well outside the Dynamos' box. Second Man of the Match, Harry Graham stepped up to take it and rocketed the ball towards the Dynamo’s net. The keeper pulled off a great save to send it over the cross bar and Harry Graham took the resulting corner.

Play reverted to the Henley end with a strong break from the Dynamos. Max Messias ran forward decisively to collect the ball on the edge of the box and quell the danger. Soon after, Michael Dowling dealt with another break with similar confidence and cleared up field pioneering another Hawks attack.

Leo Schlaefli was on form with his timely tackles and passes, he put a lovely ball though to Conor Quinn and then George Acock and the Dynamos defence were forced to put the ball out for a corner. Harry Graham took the corner which was sent out again so stepped up for the next one too. This time it was cleared, and the Dynamos countered; Max Messias proved his worth in goal again as he came out to claim the ball from the Dynamos’ striker.

Michael Dowling defended strongly in the Hawks’ box - running side by side with the Dynamos’ striker he did enough to force the shot high over the cross bar. Max Messias’ clearance went to George Acock who made a run on the right, he took a shot on goal, but it went just wide.

At 42 minutes, Harry Graham took a powerful shot in from distance, the Dynamos keeper managed a block but couldn’t hold it and the ball rebounded into the box; George Acock ran in and made sure this time it hit home and took the Hawks to a 2-1 lead.

At 46 minutes, a free kick awarded to the Hawks was taken by Jenson Lea, he took a direct shot that the Dynamos’ keeper manager to keep out. Seconds later the Hawks were on the break again and George Acock netted but it was ruled offside. Play was now dominated by the Hawks and chances were numerous. The Hawks were chasing down every ball and the back three of Ben Hemmings, Michael Dowling and Louis Catlin were impenetrable. Conor Quinn and Lucas Wilson did some lovely one-two work up the pitch resulting in a saved shot from Conor Quinn.

Louis Catlin made a decisive tackle and passed through to Leo Schlaefli who made a beautifully placed pass through to Conor Quinn, enabling him to pick it up quickly and make a break for goal - this time Conor Quinn’s shot would not be denied and the Hawks tally went to 3-1.

Just a few minutes later, Jenson Lea was on the break on the left, he took it into the box and shot across goal and past the keeper taking the score to 4-1 with only a couple of minutes to go. Not content with this score and with only seconds on the clock, George Acock knew the Hawks had more in them and broke on the right, he angled the shot in through the keeper’s hands to net top left making the final score 5-1. A great game and result that sees the Henley Hawks at the top of the league.
