Whitegrove Tornadoes prove too strong for Henley Hotspur, despite good team work, impressive individual excellence, and sunny weather!

We all gathered on this cold sunny morning for a league game at home against Whitegrove Tornadoes.

Good Start

The match was in full swing from the start, as both teams went for the attack. Henley was playing really well and managed to squeeze in a lucky goal in the first few minutes or so. I think it was Adam who made the attempt at goal - the ball then went in via the keeper’s finger tips. Our team played superbly in this first quarter. Joseph, Aedan, and Leo worked together really well in their attacking positions, passing accurately and creating several chances. Leo at some point even turned into some sort of AFC “Messi” and sprinted straight towards goal and shot - though his ball was saved. Roxanna defended superbly, not afraid to squeeze in between opponent and the ball, taking the sting out of several Whitegrove attacks. Despite all Henley’s efforts though, a Whitegrove corner kick resulted in a goal that was impossible to save.

Whitegrove Creeps Ahead

Henley continued to play well in the second quarter. Communication was impressive between our three attacking players, always looking for the right space to make themselves available, and call for the ball. Joseph defended solidly whilst managing to keep the ball in play most of the time. Leo was in goal and made at least 3 or 4 crucial saves. Sadly though the opponents managed to score again, and make it 2-1 in their favour.

"Parking the Bus"

In the third quarter, Whitegrove started to very slightly look like the better team, with a better collective defensive effort and perhaps better stamina. Aedan put in lots of effort to create chances, each time sprinting across at least half of the field, then passing to (mostly) George. (George, who we were pleased to welcome back to the team today, after having lived in New Zealand for a while.) Whitegrove defended so aggressively though, that there was no way to get through. At times there were literally five players in front of the goal trying to clear the ball. They must have each covered several miles that match, running back and forth relentlessly. Aedan and George continued to work together well, but despite some great chances, none converted.

In the forth quarter, Whitegrove cemented their victory with another goal, despite very good defensive work from Corey and Max. Arthur in goal cleared at least 2 dangerous balls.

It had been a little while since I last saw this U9 Hotspur team play, and I was really quite impressed with how much they have improved. Players and coaches: keep up the good work!
