Godalming arrived in Henley with a perfect record of four wins from four. Although the half-term break left the visitors with only eight available players, they produced an outstanding display of skill, determination and teamwork.
Henley started strongly and opened the scoring after five minutes. Max spotted the goalkeeper off his line and sent an excellent long-range effort over him and into the net.
Max was involved again as Henley doubled their advantage. After advancing down the right, he cut the ball back for William S, who arrived from the opposite side and finished confidently.
Godalming responded impressively and, despite their numerical disadvantage, enjoyed several strong periods during the first half. Their number eight began to influence the match from central midfield, helping the visitors create several dangerous opportunities.
One Godalming effort struck the post before a well-taken free kick travelled narrowly wide. Their persistence was rewarded shortly before half-time when they converted a penalty to reduce Henley’s lead to 2–1.
The visitors continued to compete superbly after the interval, ensuring Henley had to work extremely hard to protect their advantage.
Player of the Day Toby was outstanding at the heart of the Henley defence. Playing the entire match at centre-back, he remained calm and composed under sustained pressure from Godalming’s fast and athletic striker.
With only one goal separating the sides, the final ten minutes became increasingly tense. Godalming pushed forward in search of a deserved equaliser, while Henley created opportunities to secure the result at the other end.
The decisive third goal arrived from a well-rehearsed corner routine in the closing stages. Max curled an excellent delivery towards the far post, where Bailey rose to head the ball home from close range.
Max completed an influential performance with one goal and two assists, while Toby’s assured defensive display provided the foundation for Henley’s victory.
Godalming deserve enormous credit for the quality and character they showed with eight players. Their performance contributed to an entertaining and highly competitive match between two strong teams.
The result moves Henley into second place in the league ahead of their next cup fixture.
