U12 AFC Henley Hawks secure second league win at home to Sandhurst Town Boys & Girls

A wet and soggy day set the scene for the Hawks’ second league fixture of the season. Thankfully it was only the weather that was below par as the Hawks eased to their second league victory.

They set out their stall early on as Jenson Lea rocketed in a shot from outside the area that lead to an impressive save from the STB&G keeper. Lucas Wilson kept up the impetus with a great run down the left wing and a lovely cross that went just wide. Conor Quinn made it third time lucky with a strong break in the centre of the field and coolly netted the ball - taking the Hawks 1-0 up in just 7 minutes.

The Hawks kept the pressure on the STB&G defence in the first quarter – peppering the goal with Mikey Dowling, Jess Reed and Quinn unlucky not to net from some great shots. STB&G had some good counter attacks and Louis Catlin and Dowling made some important clearances supporting Max Messias who gave a solid performance in goal. The opposition managed to pull one back with a clever chip that just edged under the cross bar, making it level after 12 minutes.

The Hawks kept on the pressure and STB&G returned the favour - forcing some great saves from Messias and more solid clearances from Catlin. George Acock and Oliver Duncan came on as subs. Acock brought renewed energy to the right wing and Duncan made some key interventions on his debut for the Hawks in a defending role.

Leo Schlaefli, Harry Graham and Reed drove the ball forward – Schlaefli worked tirelessly on the left wing and Graham in the centre. Reed made some great passes and crosses, keeping the STB&G defence on their toes. At around the 50-minute mark, the hard work paid off and a lovely pass from Reed made its way to Lea who slotted home the winner. Reed nearly added to the count with an on-target shot a few minutes later.

The final few minutes saw the opposition keen for an equaliser and was testing for the defence and Messias in goal – who kept his head and made some key clearances, contributing to his award of Man of the Match. The Hawks were equally determined to extend their lead and kept up a positive attack right up to the final whistle. A well-deserved 2-1 win, putting the Hawks third in the league table with a match in hand.
